About
Born in Verona (Italy) in 1993, Marco Birro grew up in Montagnana, a small town in the Venetian countryside, charachterized by its medieval wall. The son of jazz pianist Paolo Birro, he started playing the piano at nine. He entered the “A.Pedrollo Conservatory” in Vicenza when fourteen, studying with Federica Righini, and graduated in June 2014. During his studies at the Conservatory he also had the chance to attend masterclasses with Boris Bermann, Aleksander Madzar, Wolfram Schmitt-Leonardy, Benedetto Lupo, Roberto Prosseda. In the years after high school he started working as a freelance jazz pianist and studying jazz as a self taught, playing as a sideman and with his trio. In the meantime he continued his classical piano studies with Riccardo Zadra and he played classical solo and chamber music recitals, between others with conductor and violinist Leon Spierer, former Berliner Philarmoniker concertmaster. He also received a scolarship from the Conservatory after his performance of Schoenberg’s opus 11. After attending Siena Jazz Summer Workshop in 2014, (where he studied between others with Mark Turner, David Virelles, Franco D’Andrea and the late John Taylor) he decided to concentrate on his career in jazz music. His classical heritage, though, is still influencing a lot both his playing and composing, which takes as much from Bach, Brahms and Berg than it does from Monk, Bud Powell and Bill Evans. Moreover, he taught for three years classical piano in “Accademia San Benedetto” in Montagnana, where he also worked as an accompanist in lyrical singing classes. He has performed in many important festivals in Italy such as Umbria Jazz and Umbria Jazz Winter, Vicenza Jazz, Treviso Suona Jazz, Crema Jazz. He was the winner of many awards including the “Premio Luciano Zorzella 2016” and third prize at the “Tony Scott Award 2015”. The big turn on his career and life arrived when, while attending a clinic in Umbria Jazz in 2015, he received a Full Tuition Scolarship for the Berklee College of Music. Before leaving for the United States, he recorded an album of original composition with his trio with Riccardo di Vinci on double bass and Max Trabucco on drums. The album, titled “Un bellissimo albero” was released in January 2017 by Silent Groove Records. After moving to Boston he started his Bachelor in Performance studying between others with the legendary Joanne Brackeen and he co-founded the Standards Trio with drummer Carlos Herrand Pou and bassist Giuseppe Cucchiara, with whom he has been performing in Boston and along New England. The Standards Trio was also the rhythm section of his Quintet that performed at the Berklee Performance Center in April ’17 after that Birro’s setting of Emily Teixeira’s poem “Panic” won the Words and Music Challenge Festival. He’s also been collaborating with Nikos Chatzitsakos Octet and Federico Tassoni Double Trio. During Spring ’17 he was selected by Terence Blanchard to play in one of his student ensembles at Berklee; the bands performed at Sculler’s Jazz Club and at the BPC. During Summer '18 he performed at Regattabar Jazz Club in Boston with Daniel Szczepansky Quintet. Besides his ability in the classic jazz piano trio setting, Marco has shown a special feeling for playing for singers: in Summer ’15 he worked with italian singer Alice Testa for a week-long residency in Marrakech (Morocco) and he is currently enrolled as a Student Accompanist for the Voice Department at Berklee. Besides his studies and projects in Boston, he is often travelling back to Europe to play with his trio, Beatrice Milanese Quintet, guitarist Marcello Abate and drummer Alex Brajkovic. His upcoming concerts features a tour in Greece with vibraphonist Vid Jaminik and (January '19) and a performance at Smalls Jazz Club with Neal Smith New Breed Sextet ( January the 25th).
